A young man returns home from the Iraq war after being honorably discharged. He seems to be having problems being around other people and trusting them. He finds a job driving a truck for a meats company. He is still very paranoid and afraid of people, and his only companion for the time being is his guitar.
He sings and writes songs while he's on the road. It helps stable him out. One day driving along a new route he must stop to use the restroom. With the next bathrooms being an hour in a half away he decides to stop and use the side of the road. That's when he hears something moving in the trees.
An old man estranged from his family and scarred from World War II is on his dying bed and tries to tell his story to whoever will listen. The old man's grandson happens to be in the room when he starts to tell his story about how he befriended one of the carrier dogs, a German Shephard dog.
His reminiscent story takes you to the front lines, and not only shows the hardhsips of war but also how German Shephards were used to carry messages. The old man flashes in and out from his home back to the battlefields in Germany. He tells about how the friendship of one dog helped him make it through the war, and through it all you find out why he has been so dormant. This story is about courage, friendship, and the after effects of war.
