Starring: Nina Dobrev and Victoria Justice as sisters in “Swapped.” Angela (Nina) and Maria (Victoria) are two very different sisters going to high school. At home, they are always arguing and fighting over shoes, clothes, and other small things. Angela is a senior while Maria is a sophomore. They were sharing a bedroom in the house until a year ago; Angela was given the upstairs attic as her own. Maria has always been jealous of Angela, always feeling left out and that Angela has always been the “Perfect child.” One night, their arguments go too far. Angela is in the top of her class. She is smart, beautiful, and all the boys love her. She always has the cutest clothes and hangs out with the most popular people in school. She has been crowned homecoming princess three years in a row. And this new school year she plans on being crowned homecoming queen. She feels that this is going to be the best year ever, and will not let anything get in her way of being crowned homecoming queen. Maria is extremely different from Angela. Maria goes pretty much unnoticed in school. If someone does know who she is, she only gets referred to as “Angela’s sister.” Every day, Maria has to live in the shadows of her sister. She seems so average compared to Angela. And even her parents give Angela special treatment. Maria hates being compared to her sister. Maria is a musician, but she has kept her talents mostly to herself. The only ones that know about Maria’s gift for music are her two best friends, Miles and Amanda. Amanda is sort of quirky and nerdy and talks nonstop. She loves science and doing experiments that always seem to backfire on her. Miles is a sweet, sensitive, quiet guy who also shares Maria’s passion for music. And Miles has been crushing on Maria since the third grade. But the only person he has told this to is Amanda. No one else knows. Besides being homecoming princess, Angela is also ASB president, National honor society president, and president of Spanish, French, and Latin club. Another one of Angela’s achievements is her all-star quarterback boyfriend and most popular guy in school, Rickie Davis. Rickie is smooth and suave and is your typical popular high school quarterback. He loves showing off that he is with Angela. They are the high schools power couple. Maria hates Rickie because she knows that he is only using her sister for her popularity and doesn’t really care about her, even though Angela thinks that they are in love. Angela and Maria never see eye to eye on anything. Angela is the perfect and smart “good-doer” and Maria is the free thinking artistic type. One night, their arguments go too far. Maria complains about how her parents will always favor Angela over her and never see her for who she really is. Angela screams to Maria that she doesn’t understand the pressure she has to go through everyday to be perfect and how she can’t let anyone down. They both yell at the same time to each other “You have no idea what it’s like to be me!” and leave in a huff. Angela runs upstairs to her room in the attic and Maria goes to her room. When they wake up, they find themselves in each other’s bodies and they don’t understand what is going on. They have to live in each other’s bodies for a week, in order to see what it feels like to be the other sister. This spell is finally lifted at the homecoming dance when Maria is giving a speech as Angela after being crowned homecoming queen. Once they are switched back to normal, Angela lets Maria sing on stage with the band. At a point in the movie, the sisters sit down and try to figure out what might have happened to them. They are pigging out in their pajamas; eating ice cream and junk food. Maria explains to Angela how she misses nights like this, talking in their room all night. Ever since Angela moved up to the attic, things between them haven’t been the same. She thought Angela couldn’t stand her and that’s why she moved out. But Angela moved out because she wanted her independence and to get ready for what it was going to feel like once she went away to college. It was never because she didn’t love her sister. Once Angela moved out, things between them became very distant and that’s when they started fighting all the time. They never had nights like this anymore. Angela realized how important it was to be there for her sister. So she promised that before she left for college, they would spend time together at least once a week; watch a movie and pig out. At this moment, they realize how much they mean to one another. Angela never says anything to Maria about her music until she lets her sing on stage at the homecoming dance. Angela never knew about Maria’s ability to sing until one night she was in Maria’s room and found a whole box full of songs she has written underneath her bed. That is when Angela realized that her sister is extremely talented and is really serious and passionate about her music. Angela also finds out that Miles really likes Maria. And Maria sees that Rickie is actually a nice guy and he isn’t trying to use her sister for popularity points.
