Based roughly on a friend's life story from my local church, this is the story of Joseph Ashley--now age 21, who's mother, a substance abuser, gave him up at birth; her abuse caused him to have violent seizures as a young child, but he recovered and grew out of them when his grandmother, Donna Ashley, took him in at the young age, probably around right after birth. His father left the family, after his birth. He went through a long hard road, but it's a young one--as he struggled to break free of the trauma and depression his mother and father brought on him, as well as the social and physical limitations from Mother's abuse. The mother still cares, comes to church like a good person..but never quit her drugs, and Donna knew she had to take the Mother's Place in Joseph's life. Joe's now becoming successful, despite his limitations from the traumatic childhood. He's become an assistant to the Mayor of his town, a place in politics where he may be reaching to, went to college after the National Guard, to further study political issues, and meanwhile, has a steady job at Red Robin, where he's gaining a place for himself. A story which shows the love and devotion one can give someone in turmoil, and the versatility of that person to make due with what they have and bring dreams to a reality. It may be similar in part to Push, or Precious...but drama and uplifting stories like this provide the viewer with inspiration and good feeling.
