Learning to Survive
There’s a poor family (the Kayembes) living in the conditions of the Congo’s environmental state who struggle to survive to maintain what they have. Meanwhile there has been an elite team of guerilla warfare who are made up of young men who are tired of living the way they do and start to go rogue on innocent civilians. A massacre happens in the village of Nakiele South of Kivu Province where the Kayembes live. As they try to keep safe, they hide in behind large trees and tall grass. After treacherous scenery of violence, the village is quiet while the gunmen kick bodies out of their way and look for more civilians. The eldest brother (Christian) who is about ten feet away lying still is all of a sudden bit by a snake and he lets out a painful cry. The gunmen turn around and start shooting aimlessly at his head to his waist. The men jump in their jeep, driving past Christian’s body and out of the village. Lionel the father quickly gets up, rushing over to his son and wails in a cry at the site of his sons merciless body. The mother and the two daughters are curled up as they all mourn at the site of the village. People start creeping out of hiding places and mourn over family and friends that are scattered all over dead.
(15 years later) Living in Los Angeles the family has made a home right in the middle of Compton having refugee status. The eldest daughter is Reine (18), second oldest daughter is Jannie (17) and Benjamin the newborn son is (15). The mother (Patrique) was pregnant on their way to America. The father works in a manufacturing plant and the mother works at McDonalds. Christian is born with cerebral palsy. He walks fine, has a bit of a hard time talking and limited in his arms mobility. He gets picked on at school because of his disability, his family’s race and his two sisters. The eldest daughter was held a year back because of learning issues so she’s been called a moron. Most of the kids have a lot of issues at homes themselves and rely on the system, the fittest of the fit is on top and the losers, geeks and whoever is at the bottom is picked on. Benjamin sits alone at lunch time, in classes and never talks to anybody. Walking home is lonely because his sisters walk with their friends. At home he writes because he wants to be a writer when he grows up. He writes about being a hero of the world and the dreams he has of being strong for his family. Benjamin writes about the good times him and his father would do if he wasn’t disabled, writes about standing up for others if he wasn’t disabled. Sometimes he hears his father crying because he wishes his son was like Christian. Ben gets angry and sad because he feels that everything is his fault. So one day he has a dream and in his dream he sees Christian. Christian walks up to Ben and tells him everything is going to be okay and things happen for the best. He also tells him that he’s going to have someone special in his life. So the next day Ben wakes up and goes to school. At school, at lunch, he spots a new kid at school. The kid is being pushed and bugged. For some peculiar reason the kid grabs Bens attention. At the end of the school day Ben walks home. When he does, he sees the kid who caught his eye. Slowly they become acquainted friends. Ben’s friend Lucas has Asperger’s and loves science. Lucas lives in an abusive home where he lives just with his mom and gets beat up. But the two friends combine their love with science and writing and go on adventures together where they are invincible. They even struggle together but help each other at the same time. But one day something tragic happens to Lucas. How will Ben cope with this and everything around him without Lucas?
