This is a movie about the life of President Warren G. Harding. The movie opens with the 1920 Republican National Convention in Chicago. The convention is deadlocked and the Republicans need a candidate to compromise on. Delegates approach Harding and ask if there is anything in his past that would embarrass the party. The movie then flashes back to Harding’s boyhood. He hates the life of a farm boy so he does well in school and goes to college then gets a teaching job. He decides he does not like teaching so he quits and moves to Marion, Ohio where he tries other vocations before he decides he like journalism. He goes on to buy out a bankrupt newspaper, then he marries his wife Florence. Journalism becomes a stepping stone to politics, and the movie shifts to his career in Ohio politics until he becomes a U.S. Senator from Ohio and begins his affair with Nan Britton. Then we are back in the smoke filled room. Harding declares he has nothing to hide. The next day Harding becomes the presidential nominee. From there, begins the Return to Normalcy campaign against Democratic candidate James Cox. Harding wins the election and becomes president. The movie shifts to the poker games Harding plays in the White House with the “Ohio Gang” revealing the behind the scenes corruption of the administration. Eventually Harding dies, Vice President Coolidge takes over and the corruption is exposed. The nation is shocked at how the man they put their faith in was so corrupted. Movie ends with word information about the fate of the people in Harding’s life.
